abstract:Broadband over power lines (BPL) is a method of power line communication that allows relatively high-speed digital data transmission over the public electric power distribution wiring. BPL uses higher frequencies, a wider frequency range and different technologies from other forms of power-line communications to provide high-rate communication over longer distances.
At one point all three witnesses mentioned the potential of new forms of broadband competition, including efforts to deliver broadbandoverpowerlines (BPL).
The meters CenterPoint is installing store billing information and upload it three times a day to nearby radio receivers that are connected to computers via broadbandoverpowerlines.
Power companies and networking startups have spent years touting a technology called broadband-over-power lines, or BPL. In those systems, the utility sends a data signal across existing wires at a much higher frequency than electricity, so the two signals don't interfere.
